If you’ve used any AI art creator, you know that hands are the big downfall of AI art. Why MidJourney can’t draw hands is more about the input than it is to do with the intelligence of the program. Fortunately, the AI is being upgraded on a regular basis and this is an issue that is already being addressed and hopefully fixed. In fact, if you use MidJourney version 5, you may notice fewer messed up hands than before!
Why MidJourney Can’t Draw Hands
There are more than a few images of people online and the vast majority of these are faces. Hands are not as popular as faces, which may be one reason MidJourney can’t draw hands as well. However, it’s also about the prompts you give. Specifying hand position and shape can help the AI art creator give you more realistic results.
Why Are Hands So Hard to Generate?
Even human artists have issues with hands. It’s far simpler to sketch out a beautiful face and perfect eyes than it is to capture hands. Hands are complex. They move, they have multiple joints, and they’re all just as different as the humans that have them.
When MidJourney was trained, it was obviously trained on millions of pictures of people. Unfortunately, they didn’t take the time to train it on hands. Images of people tend to focus on the face, which is exactly what AI art programs do. This will probably change in the future, but right now, it can be pretty frustrating if you’re trying to figure out how to get your otherwise perfect image to render just so.
How to Ensure Nice Hands in MidJourney
As you know, AI can really mess things up when you’re trying to generate something specific, but it’s all about giving the right prompt. Telling MidJourney what kind of hands you want is definitely a good way to improve the results.
Remember, the devil is in the details.
People have used the following prompts to help get more realistic hands:
- Anatomically correct hands
- Delicate hands
- Thumbs up
- Beautiful hands
You can try different additions to let the AI know what you’re looking for in hands, but there’s no guarantee it will work.
Should You Use the Remix Feature to Generate Better Hands?
This video is using an older version of MidJourney, but the prompt changes are the same as what you would normally use when remixing an image that you have already upsized.
The video is short enough that I recommend watching it, but to sum it up, when you remix an image, you can specify “anatomically correct” and –no extra fingers/arms, etc. This should give you the image you want, with proper hands.
In the end, you really just need to play around, get more specific with your prompts, and it should be possible to make your hands work in AI art. Fortunately, MidJourney developers are well aware of the issue and are already working on the problem.
