Can I Use MidJourney to Create a Logo?

MidJourney is an AI art generator that will take pretty much anything you write and turn it into a visual depiction. This brings us to the question, can MidJourney create logos? And, if it can, are they any good?

Yes, MidJourney Can Create Logos

MidJourney can’t do text, but for the visual elements of the logo, it works very well. In a matter of seconds, you can have exactly what you want or even better. The AI also provides you with inspiration by offering four different designs that you can choose from with each prompt.

How to Create a Logo Using MidJourney

Before you jump onto MidJourney and start asking it to turn out logo designs, you should decide just what you want from it. What is the business? What elements would work well for the logo?

Remember that MidJourney works best with detailed prompts, so the more you have settled before you start designing, the better your results will be. You can be specific, which is how you get what you want.

For example, the logo for this site was created by AI and I simply asked for a floating brain that was multicolored. I already knew I wanted a brain, but I wanted it to be interesting. That helped me create the right prompt to get what I wanted.

Types of Logos

For those who aren’t designers, there are several types of logos that you should know about before you begin. These include:

Wordmark: The name of the company with stylized text that will be distinguishable from others. AI does not work for this type of logo, because it can’t yet generate text.

Lettermark: This is similar to the wordmark, but only uses one or two letters. For example, McDonald’s famous golden arches are a lettermark logo. AI may be able to do this, if you use only one letter, since it can manage a single letter.

Pictorial mark: You’ve seen the logos that are just a simple graphic symbol, like Twitter’s blue bird. These are pictorial marks. Simple and stylish.

Abstract mark: When some simple geometric shapes are used, like Mastercard’s double circles, you have an abstract mark logo. These are usually not worth doing in AI, since you can whip them up in five seconds on Canva.

Combination logos: When you mix words and a symbol together, you have a combination logo. You’ll need to do this outside of MidJourney, since it can’t do the text. However, you can generate the rest of the logo and then add text in another program.

Emblem logo: This is the type of logo where the business name is actually embedded in the logo and is part of the graphics. For example, the Harley-Davidson logo is done this way. Again, AI isn’t great for this type of logo.

Mascot logo: Everyone loves a good mascot and this is something that AI excels at. There are many styles of mascots, so you can use a cartoon, a stylized creature or person, or even just a watercolor image.

Now that you’re familiar with the types of logos that are out there, you’re better set to generate some prompts for MidJourney. This will help you get exactly what you want.

Further Words to Include in Your AI Logo Prompt

While you can use the type of logo in your prompt, you will also need to look at how it is designed. Here are a few things to include:

Colors

Make sure to specify the company’s brand colors if needed. You could also use:

  • Bright colors
  • Dark colors
  • Pastel colors

This will help you get the color palette you desire for the logo.

Art Style

Specifying what art style you want will also help with the results. For example:

  • Pop art
  • Dreamy
  • Bold
  • Line drawing
  • Cartoon
  • Kawaii

Get creative and see what you can come up with.

Artists

Sometimes, it’s helpful to give AI an example of who would design this image or logo. For example, you might want the person who designed IBM’s logo, Paul Rand. Other examples:

  • Rob Janoff (Apple logo)
  • Carolyn Davidson (Nike)
  • Tom Geismar (Mobile)
  • Paula Schere (Citi)
  • Raymond Loewy (Shell)
  • James Modarelli (NASA)

See a logo you like? Go ahead and find out who made it, then add that person to your prompt.

Example Logo Prompts for AI

If you’re still wondering what the prompt for a logo should look like, here are a few examples. Remember that you need to let MidJourney know you want something very simple. Here are some examples that I’ve used:

simple flat vector logo of a lion’s head, minimal graphic, in the style of Rob Jannoff

letter G logo, vector simple –no shading detail

flat vector logo, very simple and minimal graphic, of a tree with red and yellow leaves –no photo details

minimal line logo of a lion’s head vector

Flat geometric logo of a purple S curved shape, radial repeat

flat vector logo of a clown fish, simple minimal

emblem logo for a soccer team, simple, minimalistic –no shading

minimal logo, diamond line art with purple to blue gradient, in the style of Ivan Chermayeff

Be sure to use details to ensure you get what you want out of the logo. Even so, AI can be tricky, so be prepared to reroll the prompt or adjust it slightly a few times until you get exactly what you want.

After You Have a Logo

Once MidJourney has created your logo, you’ll probably want to remove the background. This can be done easily enough in Canva or any number of photo editing programs. Save your image as PNG with a transparent background and you’ll have an image you can upload to a site, place over any background you want and use in your marketing materials.

With the previous prompts, you should be able to create the ideal logo for your needs. However, there are also a number of sites available that are already set up to create logos. For example, Brandmark.io. just takes info on your business and outputs a beautiful logo for you. So there are alternatives if you can’t get MidJourney logos to work for you.

Overall, MidJourney has great capabilities and if you know what you’re doing, it’s relatively easy to create an impressive logo with this AI.
